  MANOMETER
A U-shaped tube filled with the specific liquid. The difference in height between the liquid in each leg of the tube gives directly the difference in pressure on each leg of the tube. Used to monitor differential pressure.

  MAXIMUM DIFFERENTIAL PRESSURE
The highest pressure differential which a cartridge is required to withstand without structural failure or collapse.

  MAXIMUM OPERATING PRESSURE
The maximum pressure allowed in the system.

  MAXIMUM OPERATING TEMPERATURE
Continuous operating temperature at which fabric will perform without deteriorating prematurely.

  MEAN EFFICIENCY RATING
A measurement of the average efficiency of a filter medium using the Multi-Pass Test where the average filtration (BETA) ratio = 2.0.

  MECHANISMS OF FILTRATION
The physical methods of removing particles from a fluid. They are Direct Interception, Inertial Impaction and Diffusion. Medium. A term used to generally describe a filter material.

  MEDIA
The filter material through which air or fluid passes in the process of filtration and which retains particles.

  MEDIA MIGRATION
The carry-over of fibers from the filter, separator elements or other filter, in to the effluent. The contaminant or media released to pass downstream from the filter element.

  MEMBRANE
In the filtration industry, the term is used to describe the media through which the liquid stream is to passed or exchanged. Membranes are usually associated with ion exchanged media such as dialysis, osmosis, diffusion, etc., although filter paper itself could be classified as a membrane.

  MESH
A term referring to a woven filtration medium, typically wire cloth or monofilament woven fabric.

  MESH COUNT
Number of openings, or fractions of openings, in a lineral inch of wire cloth. Where the fractional part of an inch is specified, for example ½ mesh or ½” mesh, the term is understood to mean the measurement from the center of one wire to the center of the adjacent wire. Term should not be confused with clear openings or scape.

  MICROMETER
  See MICRON.

  MICRON
A unit of length, 1/1000 of one millimeter (1/24,000 of an inch) used as a measurement of the largest diameter of a particle; 74 microns are equal to a 200 mesh opening. Usually stated in terms of being either absolute or nominal. Nominal micron rating generally taken to mean that 98% of all particles over a given micron value have been removed by specific medium. Absolute micron rating is generally taken to mean that all particles over a given micron value have been removed. Naked eye can see a particle 40 micron or larger.

  MICRON RATING
The smallest size of particles a filter can remove.

  MIGRATION
Contaminate released down stream of a filter.

  MIST
Visible water or hydrocarbon vapor; floating or falling in fine drops.

  MIT FLEX
A test whereby a filter media specimen is rapidly flexed in an arc under a specified load until fabric rupture occurs. Test conditions are usually: 270° arc, 180 cycles/minute, 4-pound load, 1/2-inch width specimen.

  MMSCFD
Million standard cubic feet per day.

  MONOFILAMENT MESH
A woven fabric with evenlyspaced holes. Each thread is a single filament. The mesh combines excellent strength with little or no fiber migration.

  MOTIVATING FORCE
That which cause the coalescing, filtering or separating action to take place.

  MSCFD
Thousand standard cubic feet per day.

  MUD SUMP
Area of a horizontal housing, located upstream of the media, for the collection of solids falling out by gravity prior to going through the coalescing media, where gross solids are present in the stream.

  MULTIFILAMENT MESH
A type or woven fabric, where each thread consists of many smaller diameters threads twisted together.
