  IMPACTION
A method of particle collection in which the particle carried by a gas stream collides with a fiber and has enough inertial force so it does not deflect along with the gas stream.

  IMPINGEMENT
Process of removing liquid or solid contaminate from a stream of compressed air or gas by causing the flow to impinge on a baffle plate at a high velocity. Contaminate falls off by gravity into a large quiescent sump area to prevent the contaminates from being picked up a second time by the velocity of the stream. May also be used on liquid streams to separate solid contaminates.

  IMPREGNATION
The process of treating a filter medium with resins.

  IMPURITY
Any undesirable material in the fluid.

  INCHES OF WATER
A unit of pressure equal to the pressure exerted by a column of liquid water 1” high at standard conditions (70°F. at sea level); 27.7” of water equals 1 psi; usually expressed as inches water gauge (W.G.) or inches water column (W.C.).

  INCLINED MANOMETER
An instrument using a liquid column, set at an incline to increase sensitivity and pressure reading accuracy. It is normally used to measure velocity pressures in a duct.

  INFLUENT
The stream of fluid entering the filter.

  INITIAL PRESSURE DROP
A loss in pressure between the inlet and outlet connections upon the start of flow through a vessel using new elements.

  INLET PRESSURE
The pressure entering the inlet side of the filter. Also called upstream pressure or line pressure.

  IN-LINE
When inlet and outlet connections are positioned at the same height on the opposite sides of a vessel.

  INSIDE COLLECTION
Particles are collected on the inside surface of the bag (most reverse air and all shaker baghouses).

  INSIDE-OUT
Flow of product from inside to outside of element.

  INSPECTION
The process of measuring, examining and testing to compare a characteristic of an item with specified requirements.

  ION EXCHANGER
Reversible chemical reaction, usually between a solid and a liquid, in which ions may be interchanged.

  ISO
International Standards Organization. It is the specialized international agency for standards’ making; with membership of over 90 countries.

  ISOKINETIC SAMPLING
A sampling of the flue gases drawn from the mainstream of the gas into the sampling apparatus with no change of velocity.

  ISOTHERM
  A constant temperature curve.
