  HEAD GASKET
  Gasket seal at the main closure of a pressure housing. Usually the seal used between two flanges. Generally, either a flat gasket or o-ring.
   
  HEEL
  The liquid left in a filter shell at the end of a cycle.
   
  HOLDING CAPACITY
  Refers to the amount of solids, particulate or foreign material one or more elements is capable of retaining up to the terminal or maximum differential pressure. Also can refer to volumetric holding capacity of either a solid or a liquid.
   
  HOLD-UP VOLUME
  Also called Retention Volume. Volume of fluid retained in a filter and/or housing after purging the assemble with air or suitable gas.
   
  HOUSING
  A container for a filter element(s). Also known as a vessel.
   
  HUMIDITY, ABSOLUTE
  The weight of water vapor per unit volume, pounds per cubic foot or grams per cubic centimenter.
   
  HUMIDITY, RELATIVE
  The ratio of the actual partial pressure of the water vapor in a space to the saturation pressure of pure water at the same temperature.
   
  HYDROCARBON
  A chemical compound containing only molecules of carbon and hydrogen.
   
  HYDROLYSIS
  A chemical reaction in which water reacts with another substance, either dust or the filter media, breaking the chemical links and creating two or more substances. The presence of water in a baghouse is a significant detriment to the filter media.
   
  HYDROPHILIC
  Water-loving. Easily wetted with water.
   
  HYDROPHOBIC
  Water-aversive. Not easily wetted with water.
