Filtration Glossary | | | | | GASKET | | Material inserted between two contact surfaces to ensure aair-tight or fluid-tight seal. | | | | GAUGE | | Thickness of steel used to manufacture filter vessels, tubesheets, retainer wires, etc. | | | | GLASS FIBER | | Proper reference to a fibrous material made from glass that is commonly as a filter and separator medium. May be used in blanket or tube form and, due to the random dispersion of the fibers, makes good filter medium. Also referred to as fiberglass. | | | | GLAZED FINISH | | A finishing process that produces a smooth highly polished surface using extreme temperature. Eliminates filter migration. | | | | GRADIENT DENSITY | | A media of different densities, with one media packed around the center tube and a media of less density around the outside. Both medias are tapered at opposite ends, which allows high flow through the less dense media, and tighter filtration through the dense media. | | | | GRAVITY SETTLING | | Liquid droplets will settle out of a gas phase if the gravitational force acting on the droplets is greater than the drag force of the gas flowing around the droplets. | | | | GPM | | Gallons Per Minute. | | | | GRAIN | | Weight unit of measure where one pound equals 7000 grains. | | | | GRAIN LOADING | | The amount of particulate by weight in a given volume of air. (Grains/Cu. Ft.); 1 lb. = 7,000 grains. | | | | GRAVITY FILTER | | Filter in which the driving force for filtration is provided solely by the head of liquor above the filter medium. | | | | GRAVITY SEPARATION | | Separation of immiscible phases resulting from a difference gravity by coalescing. | | | | GROSS SOLIDS | | Describes what may be considered an abnormal heavy solid load. | | | | GROSS WATER | | Describes what may be considered an abnormal heavy water load. | | | | | | | | | | |
